Happy New Year 2012

Many have been struggling through a very rough 2011, whether it was with love or with finances, but 2012 promises to be a better year.

I wish all my friends, family and those I don't know know an amazing New Year filled with love and laughter.

Remember, it is those that have done you wrong that are hurting, you can move forward knowing you are the bigger person.  As much as you are hurt from a void in your life, there is a reason for everything that happens and sometimes the truth is more painful than we want to see.

So in 2012 face the world with a fresh set of eyes - make it bright, make it light and fill it with love for one another.  Remember, life it too short to hold grudges - and they only hurt you - not anyone else.

For many people, this is a season of celebrations.  However, the holidays are often a difficult time for those of us who are bereaved and coping with loss.  Many bereaved and injured people face this season with apprehension often in fear of their emotional reactions to what are supposed to be happy, memorable events.

It is important to remember during this time, not to drink and drive.   As I was just made aware of a good friend that lost a friend on Christmas Eve to a drunk driver, I want people to remember, please don't drink and drive.  It seems like an old cliche, however we can never hear it enough.

Also know, buzzed driving kills the same as drunk driving!  It is no different than distracted driving.  Today a family in Weston is grieving the loss of a mother, a wife, a daughter, a sister, a cousin and a resident that gave so much so everyone she came in contact with.  Whether it was via social media (Facebook) or in person, she wore her heart and her generosity with her at all times.  Our hearts, prayers and thoughts are with her family.

Within a few seconds her life was lost to a drunk driver.  This was only a short time after she posted a very Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah to all her friends on Facebook.....

Happy New Year! Rosh Hashanah 2011

The celebration of the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, starts at sundown Wednesday, Sept. 28 and traditionally last for two days.

The holiday which translates to "head of the year" is both the Jewish New Year and days of repentance. It may seem unusual, but the New Year is actually not the first month in the Hebrew calendar, rather the first two days in the seventh month, known as Tishrei.

Rosh Hashanah takes place ten days before Yom Kippur, and many use this as a time of reflection known as the ten days of penitence, or aseret yamei teshuva. In that ten day period, many will apologize to those they have wronged and hope to find forgiveness. This assures when Yom Kippur, or Day of Atonement, comes ten days later, the person will not be left out of the Book of Life, where names of those destined for Heaven are written.

A new survey reveals dating violence and abuse to be surprisingly more prevalent among college students than previously believed. Nearly half of dating college women (43%) report having ever experienced violent or abusive dating behaviors, and more than one in five (22%) report actual physical abuse, sexual abuse or threats of physical violence. Despite the high number of students experiencing these types of abuse, more than one-third of college students (38%) say they would not know how to get help on campus if they found themselves in an abusive relationship. 

Among the findings are: 
 

·         Nearly 1 in 3 (29%) college women report having been a victim of an abusive dating relationship in her life.

·         57% of students who report having been in an abusive dating relationship indicate it occurred in college.

·         52% of college women report knowing a friend who has experienced violent and abusive dating behaviors including physical, sexual, digital, verbal or controlling abuse.

·         Further, 58% of students said they would not know how to help if they knew someone was a victim.
